![]() Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 by a group of women concerned about discrimination against women in the mystery field. At that time, women tended to receive lower advances, inadequate publishing deals, few reviews, and were discriminated against in other ways by critics, reviewers, and others in the publishing industry. The new organization’s first president was Sara Paretsky. The Los Angeles chapter of Sisters in Crime was organized in 1989. Its primary goals are to help every pre-published writer—female and male—achieve the dream of publication and to support our published authors in their careers. Our mission (and our motto) is to leave No Crime Unpublished™. In the intervening years, Sisters in Crime has grown to include international chapters as well as an Internet Chapter for those who are not close enough to another chapter. ![]() Sisters in Crime/LA is a strong chapter of dedicated men and women. We hold monthly meetings, seminars, a biannual conference titled No Crime Unpublished™, and participate in many regional events, including the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the Santa Barbara Book and Authors Faire, and the Inland Empire Bookfest. We have published anthologies of our members' work and two cookbooks that have helped authors get publishing credits under their belts. We have formed a bond between those who share a love of mysteries, whether writing, reading, or selling them, and are an instrumental part in keeping the genre alive. ![]() Sisters in Crime/LA is in a unique position to expand and become even more active in the community. Our number one goal is to be of benefit to our members. Our newly designed website is just the beginning of the steps we are taking to increase membership benefits. One issue currently pending is a membership card that will offer special membership benefits. We have a dedicated and unpaid Board of Directors that is truly stepping up to the plate to make things happen. But, we are a non-profit organization and are not subsidized in any way. Our members keep us alive. We would love to welcome you to our family and help you in any way we can. Membership Information |
