From nonfiction to mysteries, these authors’ works reveal authority figures silencing dissent by abusing their power. Their stories examine how people survive, circumvent, and overcome these abuses to create real change. With Julia Bricklin (Red Sapphire, an account of employing people blacklisted in 1950s Hollywood), Naomi Hirahara (Clark and Division delves into the internment of Japanese Americans), Tori Eldridge (The Ninja’s Blade addresses contemporary sex trafficking in LA), Jeri Westerson (Courting Dragons, pitting a bisexual jester against prejudices of Henry VIII’s court) and moderator Paula Bernstein (Murder Is Hate about a closeted gay LAPD detective and the murder of a homeless trans man).
